都の調査では、ひとり親家庭になった理由は、母子家庭においては離婚が 75.3％と最も多く、父子 家庭においては離婚が 58.7％、次いで死別が 28.6％となっている 全国調査では、母子家庭においては離婚が 80.8％と最も多く、父子家庭においても離婚が 74.3％、 と最も多くなっている
