夫婦ともに雇用者の共働き世帯数は増加傾向にある。平成 9（1997）年以降は共働き世帯が男性雇 用者と無業の妻からなる片働き世帯を上回り、平成 19（2007）年には 1,000 万世帯を超えた。平成 27（2015）年には共働き世帯は 1,114 万世帯となっている。
